The Book Bus Society inculcates a love of reading among Pakistan's underprivileged children and teaches them vocational skills as well.
I fell in love with the charity
when I covered them as a features writer. These were the latest updates I received from the society's president, Ms Basarat Kazim, in August 2008:
"Yes, Alif Laila is expanding. Involved in developing a manual for the 19,500 school libraries being set up in the Punjab, working on Scherezade ka Khazana, 48 libraries in treasure cupboards containing 1001 books, Gusto 's fourth edition almost developed and much else.Initially I think each library will have approx. 500 books. Three of Alif Laila's titles were selected. The books are for secondary schools and are a mix of fiction and reference.
Scherezade Ka Khazana is the name of the libraries funded by IKEA for Save the Children Alliance. The idea was Alif Laila's and we get to set up this library in a cupboard, with the flavour of A Thousand and One Nights...hence so many books! 48 schools, chosen by SCF will be the recipients."
